Veloce is Spirited Into DEATH BATTLE!

Veloce Visrin, the Demon-Bound Sorcress of Kronzel

Carciphona was created by Shilin, it can be read on its own website

Welcome back to the blog! Like my Frasei blog, this is one I've been wanting to tackle for a while. The Vriska blog really got in the way of that while I was researching Carciphona, but I'm glad to finally talk about it! Carciphona kicks ass, and I totally recommend it. Special shoutout to the Shilin Discord community for helping clarify certain info for the blog!

Background

"Veloce Visrin, though a mere youth, those who know their place would bow in humble respect.
But just how powerful you are, I'm sure you know better than anyone else in the world."

Magic used to be commonplace in the world of Maelstrom. Magic has advanced society to greater heights, but has since become a contested topic. Magic is fueled by demons hailing from the demon spirit underworld. Magic summons and uses the power offered by demons to create miracles. Through a simple ritual, anyone could gain the powers of demons. Reliance on magic inevitably amplified chaos in the world.

While demon-powered magic is sure to turn some heads, the acceptance of magic users really started to dwindle when carciphonas started to appear. A carciphona is a person whose soul is infested with demon spirits. This gives them an outstanding aptitude for magic, but it's common for them to die at a young age due to the dangerous state their soul is in. A carciphona's soul and infection fuse into one, but continue to clash and destroy each other until the soul becomes too weak to support their body. So when a carciphona manages to live past the usual life expectancy, they make history as the best sorcerers in all of Maelstrom. Due to how synonymous with demon spirits carciphonas are, they're often viewed as monsters.

There are two main carciphonas who contributed to the ban on magic. The first is the late Auresque Visrin, an exalted carciphona sorcerer known as the greatest of her time. She instigated a war that ended 30 years ago. What made her famous was how she participated in the war herself, constantly switching sides throughout it. Every fight she was in, her side won. The nail in the coffin for the carciphona reputation was Blackbird—a notorious yet mysterious assassin who exclusively targets powerful sorcerers. When she murdered the princess of an influential country, a global Prohibition on magic was instituted.

Magic was outlawed to hopefully weaken haywire carciphonas like Blackbird. Due to the power and helpfulness of magic, many nations were hesitant to follow with the Prohibition. Thus, many sheltered and hid few sorcerers in the event they needed their power if the worst case scenario arises. One of these trump cards is Veloce Visrin, the daughter of Auresque.

Raised in Kronzel, Veloce was isolated from the rest of the kingdom as a child. This living arrangement was ordered by the King of Kronzel, who made a deal with her to exempt her from the Prohibition and remain in the kingdom as long as she doesn't use her magic.

Veloce lived a secluded and lonely life. Auresque died during childbirth, her father ran away, and Vocruen, her adored servant who raised her, was exiled. Despite her age, she was already known far and wide as an immensely talented sorceress.

Not only did her reputation as Auresque's daughter proceed her, but her entire lineage is known for its impossibly skilled sorcerers. What wasn't public knowledge was that Veloce was a carciphona like her mother. Having her soul infested with with demon spirits takes a major toll on her body, but she has managed to hide her ailment with a magic necklace that has been passed down throughout her ancestry. As a child, Veloce blamed her necklace for everything. The things that happened to her family and the things they did to the world, all caused by that relic that doesn’t belong in this world. Now she too is enslaved by it.

Due to the growing stigma against magic in Kronzel, she was called a vile witch by the public. Veloce is 17 now and prefers to be alone, sporting a cold and serious attitude that keeps people at a distance. Still, she isn't incapable of empathy. More than anything she wants to reunite with Vocruen, if at least for a minute. She lives with the expectation that everyday may be her last, as she's the perfect target for the sorcerer-killer Blackbird.

And then Blackbird was hired to kill Veloce.

Even though she prepared her entire life for this moment, Veloce lets her fear get the better of her and fights sloppily as Blackbird bursts into her life. Blackbird is cunning and wicked, knowing exactly how to push Veloce's buttons despite being strangers. Before she could be killed, Veloce is rescued by a naive noble boy named Keritzel, one of the rare few in the kingdom who seems willing to stand up for her regardless of her magical status. Veloce isn't used to kindness, and Keritzel's naïve view of her and the world is a foreign change of pace.

Upon recovering, Veloce did note how strange it was that Blackbird was fully capable of slaying Keritzel and killing Veloce while unconscious, yet chose not to. Best to not think about that for a while, as there are more pressing matters. Not only did Veloce lose her necklace in her scuffle, but the King of Kronzel orders Veloce's house to burn down after breaking her promise of using magic.

Veloce does gain the confidence to stand up to the King and tell her side of the story, but he's too stuck in how own prejudice to see that he's wrong. Even without her necklace, she's able to wipe the floor with him and his forces, but spares his life to prove she isn't some senseless barbarian. She knows he stole her childhood, but vengeance won't bring back what she lost. Instead, she, Keritzel, and his childhood friend Weirin choose to flee the kingdom.

This jumpstarts a wild journey spanning multiple countries. Veloce is famous in name only, so she has to keep her identity a secret wherever she goes. Despite that, each place she winds up in she undoubtedly leaves an impact on for better or worse. Taking refuge in Arenscura, the sorcerer inserts herself into the nation's conflict with a tribe of criminal beast-humans to expose the instigator behind it all. When she learns her caretaker is now the archbishop of the city of Medrisen, she drops everything to rush there—only to discover Vocruen is missing and an immortal fairy is kidnapping carciphona children. It becomes even more complicated when Vocruen shows up and it's revealed that he's not only Veloce's brother, but also in cahoots with Blackbird. Despite how rose-tinted her memories of him are, he isn't as great as she made him out to be. While he is dedicated to finding a cure for his sister, he's putting Veloce's life on the line as bait in order to destroy a tree that feeds on the souls of carciphonas. Said tree could be world threatening if Veloce is fed to it.

So yeah, her adventure is pretty eventful, and that’s without mentioning the many times she crossed swords with Blackbird. Blackbird believes Veloce hasn't had much opportunity to put her skills to the test due to her sheltered upbringing. She finds it hard to believe someone of her talent can be so submissive. However, Every battle brings out more fight in Veloce, proving her skills more and more to the Blackbird.

Although her words cut deep and their fights are intense, it always feels like Blackbird is toying with her instead of deliberately trying to axe her off. She gives Veloce time to learn and become stronger between fights and in some cases comes to her rescue. She's the one who stole her necklace, yet she eventually returns it to her in a roundabout way. Veloce is becomes increasingly aware that something’s up with her and tries to pry answers out of her, but she only responds with more taunts.

Along with her complex relationship with Blackbird, she starts to open up more to the people she's traveling with, along with new friends she makes. When she tells Keritzel the truth about her being a carciphona, he sees it for what it really is—a disease causing her suffering—instead of viewing her as a monster. Weirin, who's been brutally honest around Veloce, does genuinely care about her. When she meets Vocruen and learns about his true nature, she tells Veloce how it is. Veloce was chasing an ideal, a fantasized version of Vocruen, when there are others much closer to her right now making a real difference in her life. When she befriended Vocruen's pupil Seroccim, their interactions brought out a more teasing and lively side of the sorcerer. In Arenscura, she even manages to make amends with her ex-friend Meron, who stood by the King of Kronzel after Vocruen was exiled. She even manages to reform the King by talking things out with him again.

While she did plenty of good on her journey, she feels like her presence caused enough strife that she believes going against her house arrest was a mistake. All her life she accepted the fate of isolation because she feared if she didn’t, this exact pain would befall her and those she cares about. Thankfully, the friends she made don't believe that for a second, and convince her that she shouldn't give up so easily.

Veloce eventually comes to learn that Blackbird was sent to kill her by a carciphona child named Kathryn, who considers the assassin her best friend. Kathryn is on her last legs, but she's using her time left to hunt down Veloce because she blames her for bringing tragedy to this world. Carciphonas are still around because she calls Maelstrom home, and her continued existence makes the world even sicker. In order to end the carciphona plague, Kathryn wants Veloce's soul.

Even though Blackbird and Kathryn are apparently best friends, and Blackbird did promise to protect her, she doesn't believe taking Veloce's soul isn't the right solution. Kathryn also started to act more out of character since making this request, so she has even more suspicions. And then there's the act of killing Veloce. For everything Blackbird has done to her, she's captivated by her. For someone so strong, she's aimless and desires to gain nothing with her power. She can't bring herself to kill her before getting to see what she's really made of. Since then the assassin has been secretly sabotaging her cause and Veloce finally gets her to admit her aims to kill her are just a front.

As it turns out, Blackbird was correct to be wary of Kathryn. The young carciphona was used as a medium by the Anointer of the Medrisen Church, an immortal angel, to convey this lie. Pretty much everything can be tied back to him. Tricking Blackbird and the Fairy to target Veloce, and with keeping Veloce and her brother separated is thanks to his meddling. Of course, Vocruen was in cahoots with him too, developing a cure for the carciphonas together. Even though she did a lot of good in Medrisen, she used demon magic to save the city, and for that reason the Anointer believes she should be tried and have her magic removed.

At last, Veloce and Blackbird are united in a common goal, and now it's up to them to put an end to his manipulation…

Experience and Skill

Carciphonas are the most talented magic users in all of Maelstrom. The Visrins are amongst the notorious carciphonas, and Veloce continues to hold these expectations. Despite never actually fighting anyone prior to her first encounter with Blackbird, she’s always been a talented sorceress. Once she was able to start to push past her fears in her second fight with Blackbird, she demonstrated quick reactions and being able to memorize opponent movement styles swiftly. As Carciphona progresses, her combat skills are on better display. Her broad range of magic skills are imposing enough to make the inherently magic beast-humans shake in their boots. Even when she’s deliberately avoiding using magic, she’s exceptional with the blade.

Veloce’s cunning is also noteworthy. She was able to manipulate the quarrels in Arenscura in her favor in order to free the chieftain and put General Des in a vulnerable position so he could receive due punishment—all while keeping her true identity a secret. Through experience, Veloce is able to figure out more about Blackbird and how her powers work across each encounter with her simply through observation. Her battle IQ is off the charts, and kinda makes her come across as a huge asshole during fights. In her fight with Meron, she exclusively used elemental magic to mock her and demoralize the beast-humans by showcasing powers that shouldn't be accessible to a human. Veloce doesn't use magic on her own often, she usually either uses weapons or deflects/manipulates someone else's magic energy. Veloce even squared off against an actual immortal. Those beings are made of magic humans can only dream of begging to borrow. It’s her own talent versus magic itself.

Equipment

Knife

For shanking and self-defense.

Necklace

Passed down throughout her carciphona bloodline, it radiates the same aura as a demon spirit and counters the effects of its infection. If it’s off her person, she can sense its aura if nearby (as long as it isn’t magically hidden). As a magic device, it’s way more durable than it looks. If the necklace cracks, well… all hell breaks loose. It’s hard to say what’s attacking from it. Could be sheer demonic aura, or maybe a demon spirit is trapped inside it. Thankfully she’s capable of magically mending it without causing any damage to herself. Since her soul has a deep connection with the necklace, if someone were to grasp it, their touch would be felt across her soul. While dangerous, it can be useful if a friend is here to wake her up from a sleep spell.

Sword

After a duel with Blackbird, she offered Veloce her blade. Since then, this has been Veloce's primary weapon that doesn't involve magic.

Imperial Crest

Holding onto Sangyun’s imperial crest, it consumes souls to cast magic. It seems it’s also able to store items inside it like Blackbird’s bracelet, using it to steal items in combat.

Abilities

Demon Magic

Demon magic is what Veloce is proficient in. As the name suggests, it uses demon spirits as power. How it works is that when performing a simple magic ritual, anyone can summon demon spirits and use the power offered by them. Her demon magic is the basis for all her abilities, though she's also able to weaponize magic as projectiles.

Carciphona Physiology

Being a carciphona means her soul is infected with demon spirits. This inhumanly boosts her magic potential while also leaving her exceptionally weak, which is thankfully mitigated by her necklace. Despite its major drawbacks, being a carciphona makes her one of the most exceptional magic users alive.

Barrier Generation

Demon magic can be used for protection!

Teleportation

There doesn’t seem to be an established range for her teleportation. She can simply teleport small distances to freak out opponents, or choose to teleport from the top floor of a two-story building to the ground. Her most impressive usage of teleportation is when warped from another country into Kathryn’s room (current location is unknown).

Weapon Constructs

Veloce can form a sword with her magic.

Aura Sensing

As mentioned prior, she's able to sense the aura of her necklace, and can trace it if it's close-by and not magically hidden.

Accelerated Healing

Being able to heal quicker than the average joe seems to be a general carciphona thing.

Water Walking

[insert Basshunter reference]

Ice Manipulation

Veloce once formed a blade out of ice. Elemental magic is exclusive to beast-humans, yet Veloce is able to use it likely due to being a carciphona.

Fire Manipulation

Veloce has really precise control over fire. She's able to surround herself in flames to keep people from reaching her while they circle around her at her command.

Non-Physical Interaction

She’s always able to see, hear, and feel the invisible demon spirits. Humans aren’t supposed to be able to sense demon spirits, but as a carciphona she can. Anyone who touches her necklace is able to see them like she can.

Plant Manipulation

Of course being able to control plants counts as a form of elemental manipulation, which humans don't normally have access to.

Explosion Manipulation

After surrounding a target in rings of magic symbols, she can cause whatever is trapped inside to explode.

Soul Manipulation

Before I go on, I should discuss soul wards, since everyone is born with one in their soul that keeps it whole. Carciphonas are born with their soul wards already broken making them predisposed to corruption by demon spirits. Even without a soul ward, Veloce has methods to protect her soul AND harm others’. She’s able to replenish Lord Sangyun Rae’s imperial crest, a magic device powered by souls. It should hurt her, but since she’s a carciphona this isn’t an issue for her. She has also stated that she can hear other peoples' souls, which is how she's able to tell when someone is a carciphona like her. I'll discuss more on how she's able to protect her own soul once I reach the resistances section.

Wing Generation

Can you imagine what it feels like to fly with wings on your wrist?

Self-Sustenance (Types 2 and 3)

Carciphonas rely on spiritual energy rather than material. Thus, she isn’t required to eat and doesn’t get affected by things like alcohol. She doesn't need sleep either.

Lie Detection

Unlike the immortals who literally sense lies via clairvoyance, Veloce has her own way of matching this trait of theirs. She has startling insight skills.

Door Locking Magic

Makes sense someone as reserved as her would like to keep things private sometimes.

Resistances

  • Illusion resistance: Veloce has what's called clairvoyant senses, which basically means she's unaffected by anything that tampers with her senses.
  • Soul manipulation resistance: She was affected by the Fairy’s song, which tampers with carciphona souls into deluding them into giving up their memories and belonging to her. That renders carciphonas good as dead. Even with her fuzzy memories, Veloce was able to reject the fairy’s song and stop her from owning her soul.
  • Poison resistance: Lacrima, an herb that’s fatal if consumed, is the only thing that can make Veloce buzzed.
  • Death manipulation resistance: While Veloce claimed to be an immortal, in reality she’s a human whose soul is just too stubborn to die. She survived two consecutive instant death curses. The wounds of the curses were felt, but they weren’t even close to killing her.

Techniques

Impact Attacks

She can focus her demon magic to cause bursts of impact damage, which she uses to explode a pier.

Magic Slashes

Just some basic magic slashes.

Dark Spike

Seems to be a sharp spike made of demon magic.

Magic Deflection

Veloce doesn't use magic on her own often, usually fighting by deflecting or manipulating her opponent's magic energy right back at them. This fighting style likely stems from her forming a habit from living in hiding during the Prohibition, conserving her strength. It could also be viewed as a reflection of her usually passive personality.

Magic Sword Beams

With the swipe of Blackbird's sword, she can shoot out a bunch of thin magic projectiles.

Feats

Overall

  • Miraculously survived multiple encounters with Blackbird
  • Stopped the King of Kronzel and his cavalry from seizing her
  • Returned Weirin’s hairpin after it was stolen
  • Saved Iriel from being kidnapped by an enfelid criminal
  • Overpowered the enfelid Chieftain in an elemental duel
  • Defeated the goddess turned carciphona Hiraeth
  • Saved the city of Medrisen the immensely powerful immortal necromantic Fairy who was able to enthrall an entire kingdom with her cursed singing. Veloce baited her into inflicting a curse on her that didn’t work—should it fail, her necromancy would eat away at her instead.
  • Despite being rendered a practically bedridden vegetable after her fight with the Fairy, she made Blackbird answer her questions after tenaciously fighting her in her weakened state
  • Later on she actually orchestrated the Fairy’s death by making her accidentally hit the lacrima with a death spell, use her necromancy to fire at the world seal, fail, and lose her will that fueled her immortality, making her crumble.

Strength

Speed

Durability

Scaling

Blackbird

Blackbird, Blackbird, Blackbird… Honestly, it was a tussle deciding whether I should make a blog on her, or Veloce! Blackbird is absolutely my favorite character in the webcomic and has more than enough stuff to go over in a blog, but there are still many questions left unanswered regarding her so that was the deciding factor. Still, Blackbird and Veloce square off many times throughout Carciphona, so Veloce obviously scales.

Others

Carciphona has a broad cast of characters both good and bad. This compiles allies, foes, and characters Veloce should reasonably scale to.

Weaknesses

  • She’s incredibly powerful and skilled, but when she’s scared, her fighting skills are hampered
  • Early on she starts out pretty submissive, not really standing up to people.
  • As a carciphona, her soul is infested with demon spirits. Her necklace counteracts those effects and keeps her alive & healthy. Without her necklace, she becomes increasingly weak, exhausted, and ill. It’s difficult to function without her necklace for extended periods of time. Eventually, her soul may become permanently infused with demons and she’d become a raging monster herself.
  • Without enough energy, she can’t properly heal her own wounds
  • When she sustains critical injuries, black smoke comes out of her body
  • She can be as much of a goofus as Blackbird, especially in the AU series Amongst Us

Matchup Potential

Veloce Visrin vs Maika Halfwolf (Carciphona vs Monstress)

Vibe Check

The matchup can be summed up as follows: Serious young adult epic fantasy female protagonists with a royal lineage and connections to dark sorcery. Both are bonded to demons, utilizing their connection to them in combat. Both are the newest possessors of something that’s passed down throughout their bloodline (the necklace and Zinn).

I haven't read the Monstress comics yet, but based on prior knowledge, the series pairing clicked into place for me. I can see Veloce bouncing off Maika's outwardly ruthless and bitter exterior during the fight. From what I've heard, Zinn is more of a proper character compared to the demon spirits infesting Veloce, and acts akin to a stand during fights. I could certainly see Veloce working well against that. Based on what I was able to find on Maika's stats, Veloce should handily win in a researched fight.

NEXT TIME ON WCAB… whenever I feel like it
