Frasei Swims Into DEATH BATTLE!

Frasei, the Tail-Switching Delphinium

Strawberry Seafoam was created by Bryan Golden, it can be read on Webtoon

Welcome back to the blog! Now that I've passed my 50th milestone, the buffer between blogs shouldn't be as drastic as it was last time. I still don't have a set schedule for these, especially now while life's been busier, but I'd like to believe the next blog won't take several months to release. Today's blog certainly isn't going to be as elaborate as the last one, but I hope you enjoy it all the same. Expect this one to be particularly colorful ^_^

Background

“Strawberry Gem! Crème de la Crème!

Deep in the beautiful blue sea, merfolk and sea creatures live in harmony. There you're bound to meet many friendly faces, such as a young pink-haired mermaid named Frasei.

Frasei is a shy and empathetic girl living in the France-like Coral Rose Kingdom. She is passionate about music and singing, but doesn't consider them anything more than fun hobbies. Like many merfolk her age, what really fascinates her is magic! Her dream is to become a delphinium, which are dominantly female practitioners of ancient sea magic.

Both of her parents have sadly been missing from Frasei's life for quite some time, so she was raised by her grandmother. While her granny was the main role model in her life, she felt particularly fond of sea creatures. Even when kids her age avoided or made fun of her, they were always around to cheer her up. Being able to return the favor and keep them safe is what inspired her to learn magic.

Now that she's enrolled at Delphic Academy, she finally as the opportunity to follow in her mother's footsteps (tailstrokes?) in learning ancient sea magic and making likeminded friends. Unfortunately she has trouble fitting in at first due to klutzy accidents and initially lacking control over her magic compared to her peers. Still, she does manage to find a friend in top class student Rouge. Regardless of her hiccups, it seems like the start of a simple semester… or so she thought.

Little does Frasei know, a malevolent substance known as Phantom Ink is spreading across the ocean and turning sea creatures into violent monsters. Said monsters become loyal to Delmare, an evil sea witch who wants to corrupt and darken the waters with her minions and rule among the chaos. Too bad for her, she's about to gain a thorn in her side.

Frasei senses danger out of school grounds and she and Rouge investigate, leading to both getting attacked by one of Delmare's monsters, claiming ocean will fall before them. Frasei is too weak to defend her friend, but that all changes when she hears strange voice in her head. The voice directs her to reach out to her baton and fulfill her desire to protect Rouge. This causes her baton to transform and trigger a magical girl-like transformation sequence that turns her tail into a dolphin tail. This gives her the speed and power to defeat the monster, who reverts back into an innocent clownfish.

Frasei's mysterious power to change tails is unlike anything either had heard of before, so she chooses to keep it a secret from everyone as to not worry them. Rouge included, who was unconscious at the time. It gets a bit harder to keep everything under wraps when the academy's headmistress assigns the two friends to help the school's bratty designated protector in training Soleil get through a "slump."

Although rebellious and sassy, Soleil quickly recognizes Frasei's secret ability and teaches her about it in private. Not only can she turn her tail into a dolphin's, but into any sea creature's while inheriting their abilities. Soleil observed Frasei performed suspiciously too well in combat, like easily casting a variety of advanced spells she didn't know about prior. Her power is so developed for her level, that not keeping it in check can possibly corrupt her. Thus, Soleil agrees to help Frasei better control it in secret.

Weeks go by and Frasei is getting hang of things. She even stands up to her bullies by herself. However, Rouge winds up discovering Frasei's secret, along with an artsy mermaid named Bijou who joins their squad. Regardless, they agree to keep their friend's secret safe while defending the school together. Rouge and Bijou's magic would eventually advance to the point where they're able to transform into stronger forms like Frasei, with powersets based around their artistic passions.

Frasei makes more allies and fights more minions, causing her self-esteem to grow over time. She's really found her stride hanging out with friends and enjoying colorful pastries with them. As the trio excels in defending the school against increasingly stronger foes, rumors spread about a mermaid capable of destroying the Phantom Ink. It's at this point Frasei decides look into what her tail changing magic actually is. There is no documentation of her ability anywhere in the campus records, so that's fishy. Soleil believes the whole kingdom possibly erased all knowledge related to mermaid tail changing magic. Soon enough, they'd learn this brand of magic is called évoluer magic, which is forbidden to practice.

As the Phantom Ink becomes strong enough to breach the campus' defenses, Frasei's secret is revealed beyond her clique. All this time she believed she would be shunned or even expelled, but everyone saw her as the hero she clearly was! Now, it was up to Frasei to deal with Delmare once and for all. To the surprise of everyone, it's revealed that Delmare's body is possessed by the Phantom Ink itself. The Phantom Ink is actually oil pollution from land given sentience, and has been orchestrating these treacherous events for a long time. Frasei is able to free Delmare's mind, but the war is far from over.

Now that she can communicate with the real Delmare, it turns out she knew Frasei's mom when she was little. Not only that, but her mom practiced évoluer magic! Frasei's mother Gwenaëlle was a highly favored and powerful woman, a shoe-in to be one of the queen's personal delphiniums. She foresaw the Phantom Ink taking over seas and set out to stop it on her own, but she lost focus and that caused a portal to open. She wound up trapped in another dimension known as the Rift. Delmare snuck around to spy on her, but this led to her being possessed by the Phantom Ink. Being whisked into another dimension scrubbed all memory of Gwenaëlle and her magic across the ocean. All remaining traces of évoluer magic made it seem dangerous, and was since banned and forgotten about. With led to the Phantom Ink taking over Delmare.

This means Gwenaëlle is actually alive. There were signs before, as some of her magic was able to escape the rift and shine pieces of her memory and magically aid her daughter. Her magic influence did lead Frasei to finding a treasure chest containing broken harp, which she later fixed and started using during fights.

Frasei can't dwell on this revelation for long, as the Phantom Ink has inhabited the corpse of a leviathan. It's a long and arduous battle she had to face with the help of her friends and new tails she obtained. However, it's when Frasei realized music is a truly a passion of hers that she wants to pursue that she's able to unlock her advanced magic. Combining her love, magic, music, and protecting those loves, she permanently vanquishes the Phantom Ink and life is restored throughout the ocean floor.

Not only is the sea finally safe and peaceful again, but Frasei was able to return her mom to her world. Gwenaëlle revealed she kept watch over her as much as she could through her dreams, and she's more than proud of her. Frasei’s dream was to become delphinium, but during her short time here she became something so much more: a legend.

Now that life is back to the way it was, Frasei has some questions she still wants to find answers to. What happened to her father? Is it possible to uncover the mysterious artifact that gave the Phantom Ink sentience? She'll have to find the answers during another adventure.

For now, Frasei is just overjoyed her friends, family, and every sea creature can live happy lives.

Experience and Skill

Throughout her time at Academy, Frasei’s skills progress unusually quickly for a first-year. She has unlocked an unfathomable amount of spells while utilizing her tail changing magic. She has faced against a wide variety of phantom ink monsters, ranging from giant laser-shooting oysters, to a deadly twister stingray, to a highly durable lobster. Like a Saturday morning cartoon hero, she has been able to deal with such a diverse spread of foes all while balancing heroics with schoolwork. Still, she isn't a teen prodigy or anything. Trying to disguise herself as a mustached boy to enter the mermen's academy should be evident of that (even though that somehow worked).

Equipment

Brooch

Her outfit’s brooch signifies her advanced magic, often glowing when changing tails. Touching it lets her summon her baton. Her brooch is also able to magically store items inside it, like some kind of pocket dimension.

Baton

Frasei uses it to cast spells, effectively making it a magic wand. To change tails, Frasei has to morph her baton into its advanced form. Transforming her baton is based on “calling upon a power,” which is closer to summoning magic. Summons answer to a strong determination-fueled desire, so it’s easy for her to transform when lives are on the line. To change what kind of tail she can gain, she can focus on what may help her at that specific moment. Frasei can switch different tails without cooldown.

Advanced Baton

This is what her baton turns into in order to transform. It used to be unusable in her tail forms until much later in the series. Now she can use any of her usual spells while in a different tail.

Cold Immunity-Enhanced Uniform

Visiting the queen’s palace, a frost undine enchanted Frasei & her friends’ uniforms to create outfits that can withstand cold waters. If the suit is damaged, the magic will start to wear off.

Evolution Harp

Found in a treasure chest her mom’s distant magic guided her towards, discovering this harp helped Frasei realize music is a great passion of hers and something she genuinely should pursue in her magic training. Playing instruments can summon powerful beings like undines, so having that on hand is pretty useful. It was trashed during the final battle against the Phantom Ink, but after unlocking her advanced magic she mends and turns it into the grand Evolution Harp. What special uses does it have in this shimmery golden form? It's dependent on a certain tail I'll describe in detail later ;)

Moon Tide Rune

Playing the rune’s melody on her harp will summon a the rare light undine Moon Tide Ningyo, which supposedly has enough energy to completely wipe out the Phantom Ink entirely. It takes a while to summon from her brooch. The Moon Tide Rune wound up getting destroyed by the Phantom Ink during the process of summoning Ningyo.

Abilities

Sea Magic

I don't know about the land dwellers, but there are many seafolk keeping the use of magic alive. Sea magic has the potential to be used for both good and evil, so thank cod Frasei turned out okay! She recites spells called enchantations, using her baton to execute them. Intense emotions amplify her power, and a strong will fortifies a spell. Sea magic comes in all sorts of forms, but Frasei excels the most in…

Évoluer Magic

Frasei's delphinium power is the the rare and ancient magic of changing tails based on different sea creatures. Each tail gives has its own set of proficiencies and abilities, and a sparkly magical girl transformation to boot.

CQC

Ever seen a mermaid throw hands before? She's trained in fist fighting, and there is one tail that really capitalizes on that skill. Of course, some tails are made for some thwacky tail whips too. Hi-yah!

Extrasensory Perception

She's able to sense when sea creatures are in danger of corruption, as well as the presence of phantom ink.

Purification

Only Frasei’s magic is capable of destroying ink infected creatures and restore them to their original forms. Compare that to other sea magic users, who can at best destroy creatures entirely comprised of phantom ink like the Phantom Stingray offshoots.

Light Magic

Some of her tails light-based magic, ranging from explosives to shields.

Spells

Hippocampus Alatus

She channels energy through her baton to manifest these seahorses constructs

Baton Summon

This summons her baton from any location

Laminaria Digitata

A healing spell that can restore beings on the brink of death like this withering anemone

Bubble Spell

Fucking bubbles! They make for decent projectiles, but Frasei has far more interesting variations of them I'll elaborate on later.

Abrupta

A spell that purifies dark sea magic spells, such as freeing captured fish from dark bubbles.

Language Enchantment

Frasei can speak into her baton to translate her voice into any sea creature language. She can actually use it offensively by shouting in the whale language, dazing people.

Delphinius Capensis

She shoots a magic dolphin projection from her baton. Should be more useful than throwing Soleil at one of her inky enemies.

Silver Volitans

It summons a light fish to fight enemies.

Song Spell

Frasei once gifted Rouge with a record player enchanted with a song spell. The enchantment allowed for the record player to work like a video call phone app, projecting Rouge’s visage to her friends. It can also be turned into a portal with the aid of multiple magic users. Later she readjusted the runes in the spell to redirect its message coordinates to her sea witch friend in the northern sea.

Tails

Strawberry Dolphin

Frasei's first tail she ever unlocked, and a pretty straightforward one to cover. This dolphin tail makes her a faster swimmer. She can deal some effective tail whips in this form, but that's not all it has to offer. The dolphin tail allows her to freely manipulate bubbles. These bubbles of hers can surprisingly be sturdy, able to withstand piercing damage. That's not the only use her bubbles have, as Frasei has her own brand of super destructive bubbles. Same goes for spells exclusive to this form.
  • Lumière Bubbles: Just because they’re bubbles, don’t think they’re useless. Each one is explosive, filled with light!
  • Encircler: After summoning Lumière Bubbles, Encercler clusters them around her foe, closing in on them. With a snap, she detonates them.
  • Lumière Star Bubble: Frasei’s signature finishing move. Described as “spheres of light,” these bubble projectiles are exclusive to her dolphin form. They cause an explosion of light upon impact that reverts phantom ink-infected sea creatures back into their original forms. As she honed her skills, she became powerful enough to shoot multiple at once.
  • Delphinius Capensis: Not a bubble attack, but rather a spell she made on the spot exclusive to the dolphin tail. It creates tortuous currents around herself that can damage opponents or nullify projectiles.
  • Shimmer Wave Echo: Another unique spell. It unleashes a barrage of magic waves.
  • Bubble Star Whip: Frasei conjures a magical whip made out of bubbles and golden ornaments.
  • Bubble Shield: She can form a bubble shield around herself, or multiple allies at once.
  • Cérulém Mirror Crown DelhpiniA powerful spell that takes a while to charge. It first appears as a large crystal dolphin with a crown above it. Once fully charged, Frasei sends a few crystal dolphins to dive towards her opponent, leaving a powerful impact

Strawberry Seahorse

This tail is focused on purification and dispelling dark magic. It may be slower than dolphin, this form gives Frasei some neat tricks up her gills. Along with this pretty green tail, Frasei also gains a crystal, which is the basis for all sorts of defensive magic:
  • Crystal Absorb: It absorbs dark sea magic attacks, as well as poisonous venom. There is a limit to how much the crystal can absorb before breaking. It was a weakness at first, but Frasei’s magic has improved so much, that when it shatters, the crystal’s emblem turns into a giant seahorse she can charge into battle!
  • Sealeaf Camouflage: An invisibility spell. Invisibility magic takes lots of energy and doesn't last long
  • Crystal Reflect: After absorbing an attack, she fires that energy right back at them
  • Leur Leaf Spiral: A spell that ensnares foes in sea leaves
  • Sealeaf Shield: This forms a green magic barrier around her. It's dependent on energy and time, so it can't hold for long.
  • Shield Shatter: Thankfully this shield has the bonus of being able to offensively shatter
  • Emerald Wreath RayonnementSummoning this wreath empowers her before unleashing a concentrated magic beam able to blast through her opponents’ defenses
  • Miscellaneous abilities include:

Strawberry Jellyfish

Poor in defense, but makes up for it with great range thanks to…

Strawberry Shark

This seems to be the fan favorite from what I've been able to parse from the comment sections. I mean, it's literally a powerset based around sharks, I can see the appeal. The shark tail makes Frasei super fast, so it's a little harder to control compared to the other tails. While the dolphin tail is great for tail whips, this tail is more adept for hand-to-hand combat. Let me go over what makes the shark tail reeeally pack a punch:
  • Magic Tail Slashes: These slashes seem to form pink magic slices
  • Intimidation: Her sharky gaze is so fierce that it can freeze merfolk in place
  • Claw Growth: I feel like sharper teeth would be more on brand, but go off ig
  • Underwater Flames Manipulation: Fire can't light underwater, but Frasei has a workaround. Strawberry Shark harnesses the power of underwater flames for devastating attacks. It's not like real fire, it's more akin to scalding hydrothermal vents dressed up like pink flames. Our pink-haired heroine has special techniques involving these "flames," but there is one more weird thing about them I'd like to address first. Once, Delmare communicated to Strawberry Shark Frasei long distance in her lair through globs of phantom ink. Frasei shot flames at her ink to destroy it, but it actually passed into the ink to attack Delmare in her lair. It was never explained if that's how Delmare's blobs function or if that's just something the flames can bypass. The former is more likely, but I thought I'd mention it.
  • Strawberry Flame Storm: A concentrated beam of underwater flames.
  • Ghost Fin BlazeShe summons a SHARK MADE OF UNDERWATER FLAMES. Fuck yeah! Said shark is also capable of purifying whatever phantom ink-infused beings it chomps on.
  • Blood Flame GrévisteSummons two flame sharks to fight for her, moving fast enough to eviscerate an army in a single strike

Strawberry Flying Fish

Just like the fish it’s based on, this lets her soar above the water’s surface to attack foes out of range. While only above average in speed underwater, it’s as fast as the shark tail above water.

Strawberry Swordfish

With this tail, Frasei’s baton transforms into a sword. It’s incredibly powerful, but also exhausting and hard to sustain. Although she’s a swordfighter, her attacks have greater AOE compared to her shark tail.

Strawberry Blue Whale

Frasei's tankiest tail thanks to the armor she gains (and sadly her most underutilized). Her baton also turns into a giant mace while transformed.

Delphinium Power

Frasei’s most powerful transformation, which doesn’t originate from her tail switching magic, but rather her own magic skills. Much like how her friends found their own magical girl-adjacent forms through unlocking their delphinium/advanced magic, this form is uniquely Frasei. It's wholly engrained in her passion for music and keeping the ocean and its inhabitants safe. There really is nothing more powerful than being yourself!
  • Restoration: Not only can she fix broken objects, she can turn them into improved versions of themselves. That's why her harp is so dang big now.
  • Barrier Generation: The fastest forming barrier compared to the ones formed by her other tails.
  • Summoning and Sealing Removal: Frasei once played the harp to summon help. Given how her magic functions, it's totally possible for her to summon an undine like Ningyo. However, the harp knew her heart's true intent when summoning for help. Her music transcends this very reality, as this action returned Frasei's mom into her home dimension after she was trapped there.
  • Strawberry SeafoamFrasei’s strongest spell that encapsulates everything this mermaid is. The song Frasei’s mom used to sing to her every night. It felt like forever since she last saw her, so she has long since forgotten the title. Still, she knows the melody by heart. Playing this song on the harp while singing her heart out causes ACTUAL STARS TO RAIN DOWN FROM THE SKY to completely eviscerate her opponent.

Feats

Overall

  • Saved Rouge from the Phantom Clownfish
  • Defeated the Phantom Squid, who originally blindsided Frasei with her ink attacks
  • Saved Bijou from Phantom Leo
  • Defeated the Phantom Oyster after it fused with its spawn
  • Bested Phantom Captain Claw & Venin by herself
  • Helped save the Ice City from the phantom ink with her friends, purifying the Phantom Seal-Walrus hybrid priestess
  • Defeated the Phantom Skybirds attacking the academy
  • Vanquished Delmare’s prideful poisonous lionfish warrior Venin
  • Slayed the Phantom Ink’s leviathan body
  • Destroyed the Phantom Ink once and for all
  • Discovered her greatest power was in herself all along

Strength

Speed

Durability

Scaling

Friends

Weaknesses

  • At the start of her journey, she thinks very little of herself
  • Changing tails is heavily based on desire and will. It could allow for exceptional abilities, but immense power can make magic unstable. She can lose herself to magic and only answer to power, becoming incredibly dangerous
  • Changing tails too frequently during a fight can make her exhausted and lose consciousness
  • Lumière Star Bubble can be blocked if her opponent has sturdy enough armor
  • When she spends herself too thin and can’t transform again, it’s logical that her baton magic is weaker as well
  • Crystal Absorb has a limit to how much energy it can absorb. If it absorbs an attack that’s too strong, it will crack
  • Regarding Frasei’s purification, it takes longer to fully purify Delmare’s phantoms directly infused with her magic like Venin. Before their body completely fades away, the process can be stopped with one of Delmare’s magic elixirs.
  • Each tail has its own balanced drawbacks.
  • Frasei’s delphinium abilities are extremely strong, as you may have noticed. However, she isn’t used to wielding such power, and after casting a spell like Strawberry Seafoam, her excess magic risked creating another disturbance in the ocean much like her mother did before. When this happens, giant magic petals surround her body.

Matchup Potential

Frasei vs Laura (Strawberry Seafoam vs Pretty Cure)

Vibe Check

I have very little experience with PreCure, so take everything I say with a grain of salt here. I'm surprised there aren't many other characters that are magical girls that happen to be mermaids. At first I was unsure which character on her team I should go with, but learning that she was the only mermaid on it and has a larger narrative presence the majority of the cast narrowed it down easily. From what I heard, Frasei has this fight in the bag debate-wise. Although Frasei has loads more abilities at her disposal, I can see it still working in an animation based on the visual spectacle alone. Death Battle is sorely lacking in water-centric episodes, merfolk combatants, and especially magical girl representation. An episode that could combine those two would give the episode a really unique vibe. That's especially true when you when you factor in how colorful both of their series are. It could make for a seriously dazzling fight!

NEXT TIME ON WCAB… whenever I feel like it
