Nightmare Knight Brings Calamity to DEATH BATTLE!

Nightmare Knight, the Fated Ruler of Darkness

Cucumber Quest was created by Gigi D.G., it can be read on its own website

Welcome back to the blog! Yep, I finally checked out Cucumber Quest… and now I can't recover knowing it's likely to not continue. Despite that, I had a great time with it. It has outstanding art and worldbuilding, greatly-executed humor, and tons of lovable characters. I totally recommend checking it out, even if it's on an indefinite hiatus. It has been receiving a bit of a resurgence in views lately, and that's thanks to the subject of today's blog. Considering how important the Nightmare Knight is to CQ's plot, I gotta give a spoiler warning for this.

Background

"I have forgotten every name, every face. Like the heroes who cut them down, they never change. But in you, I see something else. The Nightmare Knight of legend is no longer. All that remains is this husk longing for another life… Foolish, perhaps, but not villainous. Much like you."

Welcome to Dreamside, a beautiful world united by seven creatively themed kingdoms. Got a sweet tooth? Why not live in Doughnut Kingdom where buildings are made out of cake? Maybe you'd like to dive into Ripple Kingdom's clear waters? Or perhaps you're drawn to Melody Kingdom and its musical culture. Each kingdom offers its own lovely and peaceful retreat. However, peace across Dreamside can't last forever…

Thousands of years ago, Dreamside was terrorized by the Nightmare Knight. Little is known about what he is or where he came from. All you need to know is that he's a monumental menace that threatened to cast the world in an age of eternal darkness. To further his reach, he created seven powerful minions called the Disaster Masters to rule over each conquered kingdom. With how powerful the Knight and the Disaster Masters were, it seemed there was no hope left for Dreanside. That is, until a legendary hero went on a perilous journey to best each Disaster Master and seal the Nightmare Knight with the legendary Dream Sword.

As foretold by the prophecy, the Nightmare Knight would be resurrected by a power-seeking villain, sending the world into disarray once more. To set things right, a descendent of the hero would be the one to repeat his ancestor's adventure and seal the Knight once again. The prophecy is set in motion when Doughnut Kingdom is seized by the evil witch Cordelia. She is trying to collect all the Disaster Stones to resurrect the Knight so they can take over the world.

The latest descendent of the hero is Cucumber, a gentle and studious rabbit boy who… doesn't want to go on this quest. There's a lot of pressure for him to be a "real man" and become a hero when he'd much rather go to the magic school he was really looking forward to starting tomorrow. His confident sister Almond has actual combat experience and seems like a way better shoe-in as the legendary hero, but everyone in the kingdom is opposed to the idea of a "little sister" being a hero.

As Cucumber is able to spot huge discrepancies in this adventure he's forced to go on, this fishy prophecy really seems like it's not all it's cracked up to be. And that's not even the worst part of it. Turns out, this is far from the first time this prophecy has been foretold. Every 5,000 years since the Knight's defeat, he would be resurrected and the quest would be repeated. Cucumber and his friends' journey would mark the 100th time the Nightmare Knight has returned! This only makes Cucumber wonder if there is a way to truly beat the Knight.

They aren't able to stop the Nightmare Knight from being unsealed. Actually, they could've stopped the Nightmare Knight from ever coming back, but Almond gave the last remaining Disaster Stone to Cordelia's top minion Peridot. It wouldn't be a truly epic adventure without a big bad Knight to fight!

When the Nightmare Knight is freed from his seal, he's every bit as imposing as he's built up to be. His very presence shrouds wherever he is in shadow. Every word uttered by him sends shivers down peoples' spines. He's a frightening, commanding, and chilling force of nature with unmatched power… yet something about him feels off.

While appreciative of Cordelia for freeing him, she is by no means in control over him. He occasionally pops up during Cucumber and his friends' journey to intimidate them, try to stop their adventure early, or… let them through obstacles? And then there's how he acts around Princess Parfait, Doughnut Kingdom's princess Cordelia had captured. He personally stopped a group of guards from harassing her, and since then she started to consider him a friend.

There's no way the Nightmare Knight is secretly nice! The Nightmare Knight doesn't do friends. His Disaster Masters have been with him for eons, yet he only views them as dispensable pawns (or so he says). In spite of that, Parfait continues to sympathize with him, wondering if he's so cold due to not having a childhood, or any friends to begin with.

Of course, the Nightmare Knight isn't anything more than an embodiment of darkness, so there's nothing to his strange behavior, right? You'd be dead wrong.

There's a reason why the Nightmare Knight and Disaster Masters have failed each and every time. It's revealed that the Knight has been secretly sabotaging the efforts of the Disaster Masters to ensure the heroes always win.

During his first reign of terror, the Nightmare Knight was nothing more than a force of evil acting on instinct to spread fear and chaos, consume the world, and move on. Emotion was beneath him and he had an insurmountable ego. When beaten, he watched as the heroes celebrated his downfall. He couldn't understand their friendship and happiness, but when he was unsealed 5,000 years later he finally got it. Seeing the peaceful world of Dreamside he wanted to lay to ruin, he now wanted to be a part of it. It was at that moment he grew a heart. He wanted friends, family, he even wanted to learn how cakes were made…

And yet no one ever gave him that chance. He tried to offer peace to the next hero, but he wouldn't have it, so the Knight kept never made a proposition like that ever again. Emotion was a distraction from his purpose, yet he couldn't bring himself to harm another innocent being ever since. But then there were the Disaster Masters, who were all dedicated to the cause far more than he ever could be. They still saw him as their heartless conquerer and leader, but he'd changed too much. Still, the Knight craved acceptance, so playing the part was his only comfort. That and baking, he's surprisingly a really talented cook.

He continues to pretend to be evil only out of fear. Not just because he's afraid what the Disaster Masters will think of him when they learn the truth, but also because fear is literally the origin of his power. His strength is directly tied to how much people are scared of him, and the same can be said for the opposite. The less he is feared, the weaker he is—and more than anything he loathes weakness. If he loses his reputation and gives up his role as the villain, that means losing his power. And since the Disaster Masters are extensions of his power, that means he'll lack the power to sustain them.

The Knight is used to this never-ending cycle of loneliness and perpetuating the prophecy, but this time, things are starting to play out differently. The Nightmare Knight is forced to directly interfere when one of his Disaster Masters Noisemaster almost succeeds in destroying an entire kingdom. This leads to his strongest and closest masters Glitchmaster and Rosemaster respectively to discover he's responsible and start conspiring against him.

He starts to be more honest about himself around Cordelia and forms a close bond with Peridot, who starts to view him like a grandpa. And he's actually a really good parental figure??? He does relate to Cordelia, as she isn't as evil as she appears to be, so he'll certainly remember her and Peridot compared to the other villains that resurrected him.

Even Cucumber is different compared to the 99 other heroes he fought, as he's the first to want to try and talk things out with him. However, his more trigger-happy friends he's surrounded with instantly shut down that possibility for the time being.

Of course his friendship with Parfait continues to blossom as well, urging him to be honest around the Disaster Masters. This advice unfortunately blows up in his face when he tells the truth to Quakemaster, a Disaster Master whose immortal body has been whittled down thanks to water. He turns against the Nightmare Knight, who's forced to beat himself and…… oh, that's where the story stops for now.

We don't get to see how his relationship with Cordelia, Peridot, and Parfait progresses. His relationships with the Disaster Masters are up in the air—particularly Mistmaster, who he previously cursed to be in an eternal sorrow. And of course, his climactic showdown with Cucumber, Almond, and friends has never been reached.

Even though it's unlikely for his story to receive a proper conclusion, there's more than enough content for me to confidently say that the Nightmare Knight is without a doubt one of my favorite villains I have encountered in any webcomic.

Experience and Skill

The Nightmare Knight has been resurrected 100 times. While the details of most of his resurrections are unknown, you can count on them being periods of fear and chaos. As an immortal being, he's had innumerable years to master a vast variety of powers. He has a commanding and dominant presence, making him quite the intimidating leader.

I'd also like to point out just how cunning he is. For nearly 100 resurrections, he has successfully tampered with his Disaster Masters' attempts at furthering his power. Most of the masters are super competent in their own right, considering how they're fully capable of laying waste to entire kingdoms. For being able to do this for countless years right under their noses really expresses how intelligent he is.

Equipment

Forsaken Master Book

He made a book that’s able to activate the Stone Seal in the Crystal Kingdom to awaken the Forsaken Master, a being so powerful, fearsome, and unpredictable that even the Nightmare Knight himself is wary of it. He gave the book to Cordelia to to free the wily master…… but this turns out to be a prank. Trapped in the Stone Seal is Thebestmaster, who is amazing, yes, but he's just trying his best okay??? He isn't even one of the Knight's creations. The Nightmare Knight tricked Cordelia with the book in order to prove she’s worthy to keep around.

Abilities

Large Size (Type 1) and Size Control

Look at this absolute unit of a man. He's so tall that he even towers over Splashmaster! That isn't to say he's able to control his size at will. He is able to shrink down to a more human height whenever he wants.

Fire Manipulation

The flames of disaster!

Life Manipulation

The Nightmare Knight created the Disaster Masters. Seeing as each one has varying levels of loyalty to the Knight, I'm hesitant to cover them as an army in the blog. HOWEVER, because the Disaster Masters are extensions of the Knight's power, it's fair to say that every ability they showcase, he's able to use too.

Teleportation

The Nightmare Knight is surrounded by this starry mist nearly at all time. He's able to envelop himself in the mist and teleport to wherever he desires.

BFR

The Knight has multiple means of remove people from a fight. Some constitute as their own hax, though some are attributed to abilities he already has like forcefully teleporting people away.

Immortality (Types 1 and 2)

When folks talk about resurrecting the knight, it isn’t so much as bringing him back to life, more so just freeing him from his Dream Sword seal. The Knight has been alive for literal generations and remains unkillable. Not even the Dream Sword can permanently take him down.

Magic

Magic is practiced in Dreamside, and the Nightmare Knight is no stranger to wielding magic himself. A lot of the time, his spells are associated with starry visuals.

Barrier Generation

It's revealed that the Nightmare Knight is responsible for creating this shield that blocked an entire city from being destroyed.

Levitation

The Nightmare Knight can surround people with purple stars to levitate their bodies.

Darkness Manipulation

The Knight demonstrates multiple times of being able to alter the lighting to make everything dark in his presence.

Hole Manipulation

The Knight can open giant holes in the ground he can close at will. It appears to be a pitch black void inside.

Telepathy

At one point, the Nightmare Knight telepathically communicates with Sir Carrot while unconscious. Carrot describes it as feeling a presence in his thoughts before waking up.

Self-Sustenance (Type 3)

The dad that never sleeps

Statistics Amplification Based on Fear

The origin of his power is fear. The more people are afraid of him, the stronger he is—and pretty much everyone is terrified of him.

Creation

He can spawn whatever he wants out of thin air, usually done with a magic hand wave.

Sealing

What if he seals you before you seal him???? He sealed Besty in a massive crystal called the Stone Seal, only able to be opened with the aforementioned book.

Lightning Manipulation

Lightning bolt!

Death Manipulation

Feels like it's been ages since an in-character qna was relevant enough to include in a blog. The events themselves aren't canon, but the details in them are.

Water Manipulation

7/10, too much water.

Emotion Manipulation and Curses

The Nightmare Knight cursed Mistmaster to be in a state of endless misery. He can undo this at any point, but he's too scared to see the ramifications.

Ice Manipulation

Talk about an Ice Age.

Water Breathing

Now, it's time to get into the abilities the Disaster Masters possess. As mentioned before, the Disaster Masters are all extensions of the Nightmare Knight's power, it's reasonable to assume he has their abilities too. Further evidence is is shown by how he shares powers with other Disaster Masters with his elemental abilities. Starting off wish Splashmaster, easily the least competent of the Masters. Still, he does have the ability to breathe underwater, so that should be noted.

Lasers

Noisemaster got them lasers.

Sound Manipulation

Although Noisemaster himself doesn't express this during his time on screen, Cucumber is able to combine his Disaster Stone with his wand to weaponize sound attacks.

Muting

Mutemaster has a pretty busted ability. While Noisemaster's all about loudness, Mutemaster keeps things quiet. So quiet, that he can make anything stop in place within a vastly broad area (note that this isn't freezing time, just makes things stop moving). This power also lets him silence anything caught in the muteness. Technology is affected by it, along with magic objects like Cucumber's wand.

Glitch Manipulation

Although strongest master Glitchmaster hasn't had a proper fight yet, she already displayed numerous powers. Of course, there's her trademark glitchiness. She can make pixelated visuals with her powers, or just turn everything in her vicinity all glitchy.

Hologram Projection/Shapeshifting

Okay, it isn't clear if if this is actually a hologram or if Glitchmaster is actually digitally shapeshifted—not even the wiki is sure about that. Regardless, Glitchmaster spoke through a digital projection of the Nightmare Knight, identical in appearance and voice.

Pain Manipulation

With the wave of the fake Nightmare Knight's hand, Glitchmaster sent a sharp pain throughout the heroes' bodies as a demonstration of her power.

Plant Manipulation

Now we're onto the trans icon herself, Rosemaster, and she's got some pretty sick abilities. Of course, can't mention Rosemaster without her plant powers. They do get empowered by the Hocus Crocus later on, but that's not something the Knight has on hand. Thus, any ability used in that form won't be covered. Rosemaster normally weaponizes vines to fight, but she's got one particularly killer application for her plant manip.

Limited Memory Manipulation

Rosemaster has the power to erase or alter the memories of anyone with a flower-based name utilizing an underground plant network. Very misfortunate for Flower Kingdom, but this extends to anyone from Doughnut Kingdom too, since some characters there are named after flowers.

Weather Manipulation

Kind of Mistmaster's whole deal. He's most comfortable making chilly storms, that or lightning storms.

Earth Manipulation

Time for da Quakemastah. He's can manipulate the ground, able to trap people with it.

Lava Manipulation

Quakemaster can control lava, even regenerate limbs with it.

Heart of Stone Curse

This is pretty similar to what Nightmare Knight does to Mistmaster if you needed more evidence that he should have his extensions' powers. Quakemaster has a curse that turns peoples’ hearts to stone, making them numb to hope. Soon, the rest of them will become stone too. Then they'll become one of Quakemaster’s rocky subordinates.

Overall

  • For 5,000 years, he has been sabotaging his Disaster Masters
  • Completely owned and intimidated the BLT Trio from messing with Princess Parfait
  • Genuinely a great father/grandparent figure to Peridot
  • He's can make a mean batch of cookies

Miscellaneous Scaling

Weaknesses

  • By defeating every Disaster Master, one can use the Disaster Stones to seal the Knight once more. Is it possible to kill him without beating all the Disaster Masters beforehand? I imagine so. The benefit of beating all Disaster Masters is having the ability to seal him, but no one in Dreamside is strong enough to kill him outright, even with the Dream Sword.
  • The origin of his power is fear. Thus, he’d be weak if Dreamside wasn’t so horrified by the mere concept of him
  • His own fear is also detrimental to him. The more he worries, the worse his problems start to seem
  • He considers his emotions a weakness, especially empathy for those he cares about.

Matchup Potential

Based on his concept alone, a Nightmare Knight matchup would go insanely hard. While I doubt his story is ever going to be wrapped up, and he still hasn't had his final battle yet, he has enough content that could be covered in a VS show. I'd mainly want an opponent that fits the whole “what if the generic fantasy Maou was secretly losing on purpose every time" angle. Although I haven't found a solid matchup for him yet, there is a potential opponent I'll keep an eye on……

The Nightmare Knight and Cucumber Quest have had a bit of a resurgence lately thanks to Deltarune. Totally reasonable considering how the author is a promotional & concept artist for Deltarune, but it's mostly thanks to the ROARING KNIGHT. Some people wondered if Toby Fox's fanmade theme for the Nightmare Knight would be repurposed in some way to fit the Roaring Knight. That theory wound up becoming true. Its leitmotifs have been used a bunch in the Deltarune OST, the Knight's theme included. and now people are really starting to compare both characters.

Is this another Sans vs Vriska situation where the matchup was made thanks to their theme songs (even though Megalovania fits Aradia way more than Vriska)? Oh absolutely, but considering Deltarune is only at chapter 4 by the time of writing this, there is potential for a really cool matchup to come out of this. Of course there's already the obvious general theme of Toby Fox-adjacent aura farming dark knight antagonists, but that's too simple for Nightmare Knight. The matchup's quality really depends on what direction the Roaring Knight's character goes.

Thankfully there already is some possible groundwork to cover. A core theme in Deltarune is challenging fate and the prophecy, exactly what the Nightmare Knight does. If the Roaring Knight somehow ties into this theme in the future, I could see this matchup possibly gaining way more traction. Of course, the fight dynamic already goes pretty hard and both have insane aura, so it's not like a fight between them wouldn't be epic anyway.

Aria Clears the Way in DEATH BATTLE!

Aria Elwyn, a Lonely Girl in a Monster World

Oceanfalls was created by Nights, it can be read on its own website and MSPFA

Welcome back to the blog! Is it redundant to cover a Homestuck-adjacent series so soon after the Vriska blog? Maybe, but I finished catching up to Oceanfalls recently, and I figured I might as well cover it while it's still fresh in my mind. It's also the first time I'm technically covering a sprite comic, though a majority of the visuals are MSPA-inspired. Don't worry, there are a couple other sprite comics I wanna cover in due time ;) Gotta mention a spoiler warning for this one.

Background

"I… I don't want to blame you. Because… I'm glad I met you here. I don't think this meeting was a misfortune. I'm sorry… I'm so selfish… I really wanted to leave this accursed world. But in all my years living here, I never thought it possible until I met you. This is the first time I've felt real hope for this selfish desire. That's why, I don't want you to blame yourself."

Humans and monsters. Both races had their differences and neither side truly accepted the other, but they were able to relatively live in harmony undivided. That all changed when war broke out between the two.

The war was so terrible that it resulted in a dome being cast over the world, with a divide that separated human and monster societies. It stopped the war, but hatred between humans and monsters was greater than ever before. Those that had it the worst were the races trapped in their opposite sides of the barrier.

One such human family sentenced to this fate was the Elwyns, more specifically the daughter Aria Elwyn. Aria's folks settled in a small monster village far from the political strife. She didn't know any humans beyond her parents, and she was shunned by the monster kids growing up. However, with the barrier's formation and the cruel monster prince Suvillain rising to power, every human trapped in their side of the barrier was eviscerated—Aria's family included.

Thankfully Aria was able to avoid certain death by disguising herself as a monster, using her natural illusory abilities. Even so, life remained tough for the human girl. The Monster World was dangerous even beyond the threat of her cover being blown. Due to her unique upbringing, she had to be constantly vigilant of her surroundings and the intentions of others. She learned to be seriously observant and sharp-witted, but she was lacking in self-confidence. Sure, she had cool illusion powers, but she didn't find much use for them beyond masquerading as a monster. She craved companionship, but she constantly fretted that she may more of a burden to them than anything.

Although she wanted more than anything to leave the Monster World, living there wasn't all bad, since she was able to mostly get by with her disguise. This led to her forming a close friendship with the aloof royal guard Kotori. She even managed to tame a ghostdog she named Ludwig. She may have not been honest about her appearance, but her compassionate and caring nature was genuine, and she tried to fit in as best as she could. Unfortunately that was never a possibility in a world that would crush her heart if they learned the truth (literally)! She couldn't truly connect with the monsters here, and that made her unfathomably alone…

That is, until she runs into another human in the Monster World.

When Aria lost Ludwig, she found him in the care of a human boy her age—an amnesiac named Nino. They got off on the wrong foot, considering Aria still had her disguise up, but the misunderstanding is cleared up. Accompanying Nino is a mysterious monster child named Five, who was part of an experiment conducted by monsters AND humans before the war broke out. Thus, both are trying to make it outside the barrier.

She may consider herself a burden, but Aria proved essential in Nino and Five's journey. Not only did she keep them safe and well-fed, but she helped disguise Nino as a monster. She worries about their own well being far more than her own. While a bit of a goof, Nino is supportive of Aria. As he gets to know her, he makes an effort to make her realize she isn't weighing him or anyone down and that there's no reason to put herself down. Not only that, Five starts to look up to her and view her like a big sister.

For the first time since… ever, it feels like Aria finally has some real friends, and that gives her hope she can actually return to the Human World. However, Nino's presence in the Monster World alerts Suvillan, who sends his guards after him. This leads to Kotori betraying Aria, unveiling her secret to everyone in her village. Nino and Five are able to defend her, but eventually Aria is captured, Nino is assumed dead after falling into a ravine, and Five is left to fend for herself.

Aria is able to escape by herself. She's distraught by Nino's fate and still can't help but blame herself for the tragedy, but he gave her the push to get the hell out of the Monster World, and she's gonna do just that. However, she isn't gonna leave without Five. The blonde comes to Five and Ludwig's aid just in time to save her from a predatory spirit. Given Aria's fragile state, it's easy for the spirit to mess with her head. While she does gain the strength to fight back, it's the sudden appearance of a third human that puts an end to the fight.

The girls are saved by Reed, a responsible and levelheaded human. He makes frequent trips through the barrier to search for any lost humans and bring them back to where they belong. Reed proves to be a much colder companion than Nino, as he refuses to take the monstrous Ludwig and Five along with them. Despite how little value she puts in her own life, she fights tooth and nail to prove to Reed that her friends aren't a burden. What an ironic twist!

Reed is insistent of the risks of bringing the monsters along, but Aria's relentlessly kindhearted nature does get through to him a little as all four are able to breach the barrier… coincidentally running into Nino on the other side! They arrived just in time to Aria him out during a decisive battle.

Nino is alive and well, having gone on his own adventure with a kleptomaniac named Meimona, belonging to an angelic race called winged. The only major difference from before is that Nino… doesn't remember anything involving Aria or Five during time spent in the Monster World.

Although there is some tension and confusion when the teams fuse, Nino is able to work well with them despite not remembering Aria and Five. Regardless of that, Aria is finally in the human world! She has a chance to learn about all sorts of newfangled technology, try delicious human cuisine, and she has friends to experience all that with. Above all else, for once in her life she feels safe.

Unfortunately, nothing great lasts forever. Things take a strange turn when the group starts to discuss their next course of action in searching for people affiliated with Five. Now that they have some leads, their next goal is to journey to the Human World capital, which they can totally do in a couple days. However, Nino isn't acting like himself. Just when he started warming up to Aria and Five, he insensitively suggests they return to the Monster World for a quicker route, not taking into account Aria's obvious hesitation to go back.

When Aria chooses to discuss this issue with him alone, his first instinct is to manipulate her by taking advantage of her loneliness and need to be useful. He took her to be easily malleable, but Nino thought wrong. Perceptive as always, Aria recognizes what he's trying to do, but instead of being mad… she still chooses to go with his plan.

She thinks he's correct about her weaknesses, but above all else, she's worried for Nino. He's behaving more callously and selfishly, and the whole party recognizes that. She finds it sad that tricking her was his gut instinct, thinking this kind of behavior really isolating. Telling him she can still use him despite what he just did boggles him, making him admit some details of what's going on. He believes he may be able to find something that can jog his memory back in the Monster World. Aria does sense there's gotta be more at play beyond that, but she does influence Nino to divulge that much, and the group goes with his plan.

And so the party makes their way back to the barrier, ready for their next adventure. However, their trip through the Monster World proves to be more dangerous than usual. It seems like someone expected them to traverse through this world, as spirits inhabiting it seem to be actively working together to target them.

What trials and tribulations awaits Aria and her friends?

Experience and Skill

Growing up in the Monster World where she has to constantly look out for danger, Aria has learned to pay exceptional attention to the most minute details. This has made her seriously perceptive, which explains why "Percept" is her only maxed out stat. Coupled with her extensive experience using her ability, this makes Aria an exceptional counter against anyone using illusory abilities.

Since she thrived in the Monster World for most of her life, she's very new to the history and technology of the human world. That coupled with lack of confidence and poor lying skills makes her seem easy to manipulate and take advantage of. However, her extreme perception extends to peoples' intentions too. Take for example when Nino tried to use her when his lone wolf half took over. She instantly saw through his BS and knew what he was trying to do.

Equipment

Bow & Arrows

Her bow & arrows are the weapons she starts out with. I gotta highlight the arrows too, since she uses them for stabbing. She sadly does lose her archery kit later on.

Ludwig Grimm von Phantomhound

Aria's long-time ghostdog companion! Whenever Aria is in trouble, he's able to sniff out her location and protect her with his mighty claws. He's even decently skilled at sniffing out what's an illusion and what isn't. As a ghostdog, Ludwig is half-corporeal and doesn't require sustenance.

Spear

Aria once held onto one of Kotori's signature red spears. Like her bow & arrows, she lost it later on.

Metal Band File

Also functioning as a key that fits into a hidden keyhole on a tree, it was crucial to her prison break in the Monster World.

Cleaver

She found this in the hidden compartment in the tree left by Reed. After she lost her bow, arrows, and spear, this was her primary weapon until it broke. Since she was experienced in using axes before her adventure, wielding this butcher knife came naturally to her.

Pro Caregiver's First-Aid Kit

Aria is the mom of the group, so having a first-aid kit is always handy for her friends—or herself if need be.

Faire™ Deluxe Handmade Lunchbox

Yum!!!

Axe

Aria's current weapon, which she already has lots of experience using.

Abilities

Inventory (Storage)

As Oceanfalls is very video game-inspired, every character has an inventory system that lets them store up to four items.

Mirage

Every human and monster has one ability tied to their very existence. They are manifestations of "emotion and thought that comes deep from the person's soul." A person's ability awakens during a crucial moment in their lives where intense emotions are felt. Depending on what the person is thinking and feeling, one's soul awakens this ability to suit those factors. Abilities have confines and restrictions specific to them. The more one uses their ability and experiment with it, the more the user will know about it. Abilities seem magical in nature, but everything an ability does is explainable.

Take Aria's ability for instance: Mirage. Mirage is based around illusions, mainly through altering her appearance. Illusions rely on two key factors to exist: the area it covers and the observing eyes it tricks. The more effort she puts into the illusion, the more focus it takes to maintain it. It takes a lot of energy to change her entire appearance, so something small like giving her typical monster features is easy. She has been able to thrive in the Monster World for so long since she's able to just give herself a horn and red eyes just like all the other folks.

She's even able to use mirage on other people through touch, and can sense people bearing her illusions so long as the illusion remains in tact. Later on, her illusions evolve to become more tangible and durable, like when she used a stick in place of a monster horn. It only started looking like a stick again when it was pulled off his head. She's even capable of giving her body full camouflage. However, all it is is just tricking the eye. If anyone were to see her reflection, they'd be able to tell her true appearance. It also has its limitations in only being able to alter her appearance to match beings that share her proportions.

Techniques

Battle Options

In Oceanfalls, the Nino and his party members can engage in fights in three different ways. First up is the reliable Combat. The only sub-options in that category are to "Attack" or "Defend." If you prefer doing a pacifist route, then Diplomacy is the option for you. The only option available in Diplomacy is "Talk." Lastly is Stealth, which is less about suspiciously sneaking around and more successfully running away from battle. Its sub-options include "Flee" and "End Fight."

Cleaver/Axe Techniques

Each one is written out well here. Given how she used her cleaver like she would an axe, I figure these moves carry on to when she's wielding her axe.

Illusion Hijacking

During her fight against the spirit Sintheia, she learned how to overtake an opponent's illusions and change them to appear however she sees fit. In order to do this, she has to realize what the main point of the illusion is, like the reason it appears the way it does.

Any type of illusion always needs a source to draw ideas from, and use them to shape its image. The purpose of Sintheia's illusion was to trap Reed in an illusory maze, making him the spirit's main observer. All she had to do was change whose eyes were being tricked by her "veil." Instead of making Reed feel trapped and helpless, Aria replaced the illusion with a scene that would make him feel hopeful directly from her heart.

It's also good to mention that during the sequence Aria first uses this ability, the page borders transform from Sintheia's illusion into Aria's, which is pretty swag.

Feats

Overall

  • Escaped prison using mirage to camouflage herself against the wall and leave when the cell is open

Nino's Party

Aria is a core member of Nino's party. As they all (sans Five) fight side by side with comparable opponents, they all should be on a similar level to each other.

Kaji Pyxis

The alcoholic boyfail pirate cop himself. A few major feats and scaling moments happen during Nino's party's spar against him. It took the combined efforts of all four to take him down.

Others

Oceanfalls has a massive cast spanning humans, monsters, winged, and more recently spirits. Regardless of their importance in the narrative, this section will cover characters that may not have as many notable feats as the previous characters, but still have one or two worth mentioning.

Weaknesses

  • A person's soul resides in their heart, so destroying one's heart is a sure fire way to permanently kill someone. Monsters have made a ritual to kill humans by destroying their hearts, so that anyone with a healing-related ability won't be able to somehow survive.
  • Aria's lowest stat is "mind." A little ironic considering how much Mirage depends on messing with peoples' heads, but it makes sense given her low self esteem and mental consitution
  • She has a tendency to be distracted when it comes to things that fascinate her
  • Has some self esteem issues, viewing herself as a burden to her friends
  • Can’t disguise as anything with very different proportions than hers
  • Her disguise ability only tricks the eyes. Reflective surfaces like mirrors reveal her true form
  • She’s occasionally worryingly careless when it comes to herself
  • She’s so obvious about everything, so she’s terrible at lying. She was able to get by masking her appearance, but all other attempts at lying fall flat
  • Mirage doesn’t protect her mind from being read. Though illusions are based on people's memories, the ability to plainly see what those memories contain for oneself is separate from the ability to make illusions. As a human, you can only have one or the other.
  • This also means she can't see through illusions, as she's still affected by them. She just uses her exceptional perception to infer what is and isn't real.
  • Really inexperienced with technology.

Aria Elwyn vs Gus Porter (Oceanfalls vs The Owl House)

Vibe Check

Beyond both being proficient illusionists, I quickly pinned down the connection between their thirst for knowledge of human cultures and societies. Having lived in the exclusively non-human Boiling Isles all his life, Gus has a deep fascination and appreciation for all things human. Meanwhile Aria deeply wanted to learn more about her own culture, having been isolated from humans for such a long time in the monster world.

I wasn't sure if Gus was that VS viable beyond his illusions, as it's been a while since I've finished TOH, but I was reminded that he does learn how to use glyphs so he should be able to bounce off her weapons well.

The main draw of the dynamic of course comes from the illusion fight. Gus' illusions are way more diverse compared to her own. He's got illusion clones, more complex illusion constructions, completely warp nearby terrain, and make others re-live their own traumatic memories. The manner in which Aria responds to the illusions is absolutely the emotional crux of the fight. Gus' last ability I mentioned especially could be really effective against Aria if it's in-character for him to do it against her, but in the long-run it may not amount to much when she's able to locate the source of his illusions and completely overtake them. That's like, the ideal Aria fight dynamic right there!!

As for who wins, I can't say for sure without knowing how far Gus scales to the cast. Even so, Aria does have a better win-con so I'd be inclined to believe she could win if the stats are close enough.
